Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (Certificated position, can apply anytime)
Job Requirements:
The following are required:
- Valid Alaska Initial, Professional, or Master teaching certificate with an endorsement in Special Education - Hearing Impairment, or similar.
- HQT (Highly Qualified Teacher) designation in Elementary Education. Successful candidate may need to obtain additional HQT designations depending upon future course assignments after this hiring process.
- Fluency in American Sign Language.
The following are preferred:
- Evidence of experience working with special education students.
- Experience working collaboratively to support the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) needs of special education students in a public school setting.
Educational Interpreter (Classified position, must apply for a specific posted opening)
An Educational Interpreter interprets and transliterates between deaf students and English speaking non-signers in school-related environments. The interpreter tutors students and provides other supports to the learning environment. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) and is represented by the Anchorage Council of Education bargaining unit. You are required to have:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must acquire an EIPA 4.0 or above and the passage of the knowledge Written Test within three years of hire.
- Must be knowledgeable regarding American Deaf culture and sensitive to multicultural environmental conditions.
- Must be fluent in American Sign Language and spoken/written English, including academic English.
- Must have the ability to effectively and accurately comprehend, interpret, and transliterate ASL to English and vice versa among students, staff, parents, administrators, and the public.
The following are preferred:
- An associate’s degree in American Sign Language Interpreting from an accredited college or University.
- Must be working toward RID certification or equivalent.
- Completion of an educational interpreter training program, or documented proof of ongoing participation in interpreter training activities.
- Minimum of two years of paid interpreting work.
- Possession and maintenance of an Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment rating of 3.5.
- Receipt of a passing score on the Educational Interpreter Knowledge Assessment (EIPA-WT).
Teacher Assistant (Classified position, must apply for a specific posted opening)
A Special Education Teaching Assistant ASL/English provides direct instructional and support services to deaf and hard of hearing students who require a visual sign language to access instructional information. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) and is represented by the Anchorage Council of Education bargaining unit. You are required to have:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, inspire confidence and cooperation and establish and maintain a professional relationships.
- Must meet the standard of an Intermediate+ rating on the Sign Communication Proficiency interview within one year of employment.
