Writing Task 2 – Overview

  • Writing is different for Academic and General Training.
  • The IELTS Writing test lasts around 60 minutes.
  • The examiner does not control the time of your answers.
  • It is suggested to spend 20 minutes on Task 1 and 40 minutes on Task 2
  • There are 2 Sections to the test
    • Task 1 = 150 words (or more) Describing a graph, chart or table
    • Task 2 = 250 words (or more) Essay
  • Task 2 carries more marks than task 1
  • The Writing test is marked using an Assessment Criteria

Writing Test

Assuming you are keeping to your timetable and have only spent 20 minutes on Task 1, you will have less than 40 minutes to complete Task 2. Task 2 relates to a greater part of the overall score of the Writing test. Test takers will write at least 250 words in Task 2. Test takers will be penalised if their answer does not relate to the topic. Answers should be written in full sentences.

Writing in IELTS Academic

Task 2: Test takers discuss a point of view, argument or problem. Depending on the task, test takers may answer Questions in the form of

  1. Opinion (Agree or Disagree)
  2. Advantages and Disadvantages
  3. Problem and Solution
  4. Discussion (Discuss both views)
  5. Two-part Question

IELTS General Training

Task 2: is in the form of an essay. Test takers write an essay about a topic of general interests. In general, the question forms will be the same as in the academic and require similar skills to address the subjects.

  1. Opinion (Agree or Disagree)
  2. Advantages and Disadvantages
  3. Problem and Solution
  4. Discussion (Discuss both views)
  5. Two-part Question
